A Japanese Constellation: Toyo Ito, SANAA, and Beyond at The Museum of Modern Art, March 13 – July 4, 2016

A Japanese Constellation maps a network of architects who gravitate around Toyo Ito (born 1941) and SANAA, the office founded in 1995 by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa. Focusing on work made since the start of the twenty-first century, the exhibition highlights themes that link the architects’ careers—from Ito’s influence as a mentor to innovations in the designs of a younger generation, represented by Sou Fujimoto, Akihisa Hirata, and Junya Ishigami. The architects featured are affected by the complex metropolitan culture of Tokyo, where their studios are located, and are distinguished by the give-and-take that has emerged in their different roles as masters, disciples former students, and colleagues.” — The Museum of Modern Art
